You Need a Coach!

The Bible says life is like a race.

Read these verses:

You've all been to the stadium and seen the athletes race. Everyone runs; one wins.
Run to win.
All good athletes train hard. They do it for a gold medal that tarnishes and fades. You're after one that's gold eternally.
I don't know about you, but I'm running hard for the finish line. I'm giving it everything I've got. No sloppy living for me! I'm staying alert and in top condition. I'm not going to get caught napping, telling everyone else all about it and then missing out myself.
1 Corinthians 9:24-26 ("The Message")

And in the case of an athlete, no one is crowned without competing according to the rules.
2 Timothy 2:5 (NRSV)

Let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us.
Hebrews 12:1

Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. No one serving in the army gets entangled in everyday affairs; the soldier’s aim is to please the enlisting officer.

the Holy Spirit testifies that in every city chains and tribulations await me. But none of these things move me; nor do I count my life dear to myself, so that I may finish my race with joy, and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God.

Every Gold Medal athlete -- every one who is serious about competing and winning -- gets himself a coach. You won't win this race by going at it alone.

If you want to become a gold medal-winning Olympic athlete, you would get a coach. Tiger Woods has more than one coach for his golf game. (He needs a coach for his personal life.)

America's Founding Fathers had coaches, and this is why these extraordinary individuals created an extraordinary nation. Their first coach was their parents. Their parents sometimes created schools, and coaches called teachers. Parents and teachers in America's Founding Era believed in "Liberty Under God," and made sure their children/students understood the three pillars of extraordinary human beings: religion, morality and knowledge. Schools today produce students who are functionally illiterate (if they graduate at all) and know nothing about religion and morality. America's Founding Fathers would be shocked and appalled.

When the U.S. Supreme Court removed voluntary prayer and Bible reading in public schools, one justice admitted that the primary purpose of schools in the Founding Era was to teach religion and morality. See footnote 9 of Justice Douglas' concurring opinion in Engel v. Vitale, 370 US 421 at 443, the 1962 case which removed prayer from public schools. He admitted:

Religion was once deemed to be a function of the public school system. The Northwest Ordinance, which antedated the First Amendment, provided in Article III that Religion, morality, and knowledge being necessary to good government and the happiness of mankind, schools and the means of education shall forever be encouraged.

Removing religion and morality from schools accomplished two things.
First, it removed knowledge as well. A student who lacks true religion believes he is his own god. He doesn't have to listen to teachers or experts. He doesn't have to respect the learning environment of other students. Schools today are chaos compared to schools in colonial America because religion and morality have been removed.
Second, removing religion and morality from schools created socialist government in America. America's Founding Fathers understood that order in society can only be created in two ways: God or Guns. Bibles or Bureaucrats. John Adams put it this way:
[I]t is religion and morality alone which can establish the principles upon which freedom can securely stand. The only foundation of a free constitution is pure virtue.
[W]e have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion. . . . Our constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.

Ben Franklin said it this way:

[O]nly a virtuous people are capable of freedom. As nations become corrupt and vicious, they have more need of masters.

You weren't taught religion and morality in schools like Samuel Adams was. Samuel Adams and John Hancock plotted a "Tea Party" in the Boston Harbor over a tax of three pence per pound of tea. You pay ten times more taxes on every gallon of gas and you sit there silently. You were never taught that tyranny is immoral. You were taught that the State is your Savior.

If you want to become a true American, you need a new teacher. You need a coach.
