GOVERNMENT
The Department of the Treasury

The 112th Congress should:

  • end the government monopoly on minting
  • end all vestiges of government prohibition of alcohol, tobacco and firearms

According to its official web page, "the basic functions of the Department of the Treasury include:
  • Managing Federal finances;
  • Collecting taxes, duties and monies paid to and due to the United States and paying all bills of the United States;
  • Producing all postage stamps, currency and coinage;
  • Managing Government accounts and the public debt;
  • Supervising national banks and thrift institutions;
  • Advising on domestic and international financial, monetary, economic, trade and tax policy;
  • Enforcing Federal finance and tax laws;

Nothing surprising so far. But how about

  • Investigating and prosecuting tax evaders, counterfeiters, forgers, smugglers, illicit spirits distillers, and gun law violators;

Did you know that the government still considers some alcohol "illicit," even though prohibition was repealed? And why is the Treasury in charge of gun control?

  • Protecting the President, Vice President, their families, candidates for those offices, foreign missions resident in Washington and visiting foreign dignitaries.

Why the Department of the Treasury?
