Notes and Summary of the President's Address -- Independence Day
THE PRESIDENT: Good morning. This weekend, Americans are celebrating the anniversary of our Nation's independence. Two hundred and thirty-two years ago, our Founding Fathers came together in Philadelphia to proclaim that all men are created equal and that they are endowed by their Creator with unalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. How the President Differs from the American vision of "Liberty Under God":
- Liberty is incompatible with a "secular" government. According to Jefferson, the "only firm basis" of liberty is "a conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are the gift of God."
- America was once a Christian nation, according to the Supreme Court. Today, the government is atheistic.
- Anyone whose allegiance to God is greater than their allegiance to the government cannot become an American citizen.
- Washington D.C. is far more tyrannical that the British government of 1776.

Our rights are the product of "Intelligent Design," something public school teachers are prohibited by the federal government from teaching their students. Students cannot even learn about the "creation-evolution" debate, much less can teachers endorse or promote belief in the Creator, teaching
students that one side is right and the other is wrong.
Jefferson said, "The God who gave us life gave us liberty."
And can the liberties of a nation be thought secure, when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are the gift of God? That they are not to be violated but with his wrath? Indeed I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just: that his justice can not sleep forever: that considering numbers, nature and natural means only, a revolution of the wheel of fortune, an exchange of
situation is among possible events: that it may become probable by supernatural interference!

| The man who wrote those immortal words was Thomas Jefferson. Yesterday, I celebrated the Fourth of July at Monticello, Jefferson's home in Virginia. While there, I witnessed an event that would have made the author of the Declaration of Independence proud. On Monticello's lawn, more than 70 men and women from dozens of countries raised their right hands to take the oath of American citizenship. They
swore their allegiance to the Constitution. They promised that they would defend the laws of the United States. And they reminded everyone in attendance that the promise of America is open to all. |
If your allegiance to God is greater than your allegiance to the government, you cannot become an American citizen. You cannot become a lawyer, or teach your views in public schools.
Most lawyers and politicians who have taken this oath of support for the Constitution have never read the Constitution.
Swearing an oath is an act of religious worship.

| These new citizens come from countries as diverse as Burma, Afghanistan, Norway, and Iraq. These new citizens are proof that there is no American race, just an American creed. In the United States, we believe in the rights and dignity of every person. We believe in equal justice, limited government, and the rule of law. And we believe in personal
responsibility and tolerance towards others. This creed of freedom and equality has lifted the lives of millions of Americans, whether citizens by birth or citizens by choice. |
The word "creed" comes the Latin word credo, which means, "I believe." What is "the American creed?" Do you know? Do you know who decides this? |
| This creed of freedom has required brave defenders, and every generation of Americans has produced them. From the soldiers who fought for independence at Bunker Hill and Yorktown, to the Americans who broke the chains of slavery, liberated Europe and Asia from tyranny, and brought down an evil empire, the people of this great land have always risen to freedom's defense. |
Who is truly free: the slave who obeys his master as he would Christ Himself, or the slave who cannot refrain himself from killing his master in order to gain a legal title of "freedom?"
Does freedom really require killing people?
Are armies the "only firm basis" of our liberties?

| Today, the men and women of America's Armed Forces continue this proud tradition of defending liberty. In places like Afghanistan and Iraq, many risk their lives every day to protect America and uphold the principle that human freedom is the birthright of all people and a gift from the Almighty. These brave Americans make it possible for America to endure as a free society.
So on this Fourth of July, we owe all those who wear the uniform of the United States a special debt of gratitude. And we thank their families for supporting them in this crucial time for our Nation. |
Probably more than any other agency of government, the military is responsible for a radical diminution of our freedoms.

| The Fourth of July is a day when all Americans take a moment to share a collective sense of pride in our country. We live in a Nation founded on the power of an idea, a Nation where opportunity is limited only by imagination, and a Nation that has done more than any other to spread the light of liberty throughout the world. Today, that light shines as brightly as it did
in 1776. And with "the protection of Divine Providence" it will continue to shine brightly for generations to come. |
The United States exports more weapons and pornography than Bibles.
Providence means the Founding Fathers were not "deists."

Revolution Won't Come in a Day
John Adams once wrote that the American Revolution began in 1761, when Massachusetts attorney James Otis began legal challenges to the Writs of Assistance. He lost the case, but "American independence," Adams wrote, "was
then and there born." Now do the math. That means it took 15 years to convince the rest of America to declare Independence (1776). Then another seven years of war was required before a Peace Treaty was signed (1783), and then six years before the Constitution was finally ratified (1789). That's almost 30 years. (And Jefferson said we shouldn't go 20 years without
another rebellion!) How can we hope to convince Americans to fight for principles they were never taught in government schools? We need to be in this battle for the long term. "Eternal Vigilance is the Price of Liberty."

"Cap and Trade" is not the way
The politicians seem to be unifying around "cap and trade" as a way to cut CO2 emissions. If they take this step it may be the largest increase in the size, scope, and intrusiveness of government since the creation of Medicare. Worse still, it may not even achieve its purpose. Iraq Waste
Big government prospers through failure. Each new failure is used to justify more spending and new powers. Wasteful spending in Iraq is the latest example. Congress and the President have spent four years experimenting with American lives, trying to find a way to bring peace to Iraq. It is time for the experiments to end. It is time for the Iraqi's to resolve their own problems. HR 413 would de-authorize the U.S. occupation of Iraq. Tell Congress to stop the experiments. Tell Congress to pass HR 413.

Stop the War for Terror
U.S. policy has inflamed the Middle East. It has made terrorism more likely rather than less. We seem to be fighting a war for terror, rather than on terror. This policy must stop. The place to start stopping is with Iran. We must not attack Iran. War with Iran would devastate our economy, disrupt world oil supplies, and recruit more terrorists. Click

The Democrat Party Radio Address:
The The Democratic Radio Address was delivered by Senator Dick Durbin of Illinois, who complained about filibusters in the Senate, particularly regarding government involvement in the provision of medicine and health care.
The provision of medicine and health care, like the provision of housing, groceries, clothing, consumer electronics, and everything else that Americans enjoy as part of the highest standard of living in human history, are the proper domain of "greedy capitalists," competing against each other for the patronage of consumers. The federal government has no Constitutional authority to meddle in the Market, which has succeeded beyond the wildest imaginations
of those who signed the Constitution. Every action the government takes diminishes our lives in the long run (though the politicians will always point to some short-term benefit to justify their unconstitutional intervention).
